Welcome to

the official website of the Global Symposium
on Ageing, Seoul 2017 on October 23rd and 24th.

In recent decades, many countries across the globe have experienced accelerated population ageing – a phenomenon that is rapidly spreading throughout the industrialized and developing world. These demographic shifts lead to far-reaching social and economic changes at the the individual-, family-, community-, and national level. Governments, international organizations, and research institutions are working on the challenges and opportunities generated by ageing societies. They have developed policies and programs to integrate issues related to population ageing with national development plans and poverty reduction strategies. In 2002, the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA). This document is a global agenda guiding countries on how to perceive, interact with, and care for older people in the ageing populace of the 21st century.

The Global Symposium will be co-hosted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) with local support from the Asia Pacific Population Institute (APPI) in order to review and appraise progress fifteen years after the adoption of MIPAA. The agenda includes a plenary discussion, high-level round tables, thematically focused sessions, and technical discussions by members of academia, international organizations, and political decision makers. These events will consider policies and national investments that have led to the generation of a second demographic dividend in ageing countries. Participants will further discuss the contributions of the Sustainable Development Agenda towards demographic resilience and socio-economic sustainability in a rapidly ageing world. Through this, the Global Symposium will serve as preparatory meeting one year ahead of the United Nations Madrid +15 Inter-Governmental Conference due to begin in 2018.

We look forward to your continued interest, participation, and active engagement in the Global Symposium on Ageing. The event will be held at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Thank you.
